John Cinnamon and I traveled to Makokou, Gabon and nearby areas in August 2008. While there we filmed a number of rituals over several nights in Libreville, Makokou, Eshia’sa’dé and along the road to Mekambo. Also, I had the chance to visit and film the amazing waterfall complex at Kongou Falls, some 25 miles downriver from Makoku by motorized pirogue.
We are working on a documentary film of some of what we saw, and this site, with photos, audio and video, is where we share info back and forth with one another as we work on this project.
As a first taste, here is some ngombé music I recorded in August 2008 in Eshia’sa’dé on the upper Ivindo River, 75 or so miles north of Makokou and about 10 miles south of Mvadi near the Congo border. (An ngombé is an 8 string African harp used in ceremonies across Gabon.)
